Adding an SVG to Bambu Studio: Three Import Paths, One Right Answer

Bambu Studio reads STL/3MF, not SVG. Convert SVG to STL in Blender or Tinkercad: extrude paths, export binary STL, import into Bambu Studio. For text, use Bambu Studio's text tool (T). For multi-color logos, use Paint tool (P) to assign AMS filaments to mesh regions.

Bambu Studio does not import SVG directly — it expects 3D meshes in STL, 3MF, OBJ, or STEP format. When you want to print a 2D logo, icon, or text design, you must first convert the SVG into a 3D mesh by extruding it to a specified height. The conversion can happen in an external tool (Blender, Tinkercad, OpenSCAD) before importing into Bambu Studio, or you can use Bambu Studio's built-in text tool for simple lettering. This guide explains both workflows, shows how to scale and position the result on the build plate, and demonstrates multi-color logo printing with AMS.

Why Bambu Studio Doesn't Read SVG

SVG is a 2D vector format — it describes paths, curves, and text with no depth. Bambu Studio is a slicer for 3D printing, which requires 3D geometry (vertices, faces, and volume). To bridge the gap, you extrude the SVG into a 3D mesh, then import that mesh into Bambu Studio as STL or 3MF.

Bambu Studio does have a built-in text tool that lets you type text, choose a font, and extrude it instantly. This is faster than external conversion for simple labels and lettering, but it does not support custom shapes, logos, or imported fonts beyond the system font list.

Method 1: Convert SVG to STL Externally, Then Import

This is the most flexible workflow. You prepare the SVG in Inkscape or Illustrator, convert it to STL in Blender or Tinkercad, and import the STL into Bambu Studio for slicing.

Step 1: Prepare the SVG

Open your SVG in Inkscape or Illustrator. Convert any text to paths: in Inkscape, select all text and choose Path → Object to Path; in Illustrator, select all text and choose Type → Create Outlines. This ensures the text becomes vector outlines that can extrude into 3D shapes.

Close all open paths: select all paths and choose Path → Close Path in Inkscape. Open paths cannot extrude into solid meshes.

Simplify complex shapes: select all and run Path → Simplify (Ctrl+L in Inkscape) twice. This reduces node count and produces leaner STL files.

Merge overlapping shapes: if your logo has overlapping elements (e.g., a letter inside a circle), select the shapes and use Path → Union (merge) or Path → Difference (cut) to resolve ambiguity. This prevents non-manifold geometry that slicers cannot process.

Step 2: Extrude the SVG to 3D

Use Blender, Tinkercad, or OpenSCAD to convert the prepared SVG into an STL mesh.

Using Blender

Open Blender, delete the default cube (X, confirm), and go to File → Import → Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg). Select your SVG. Blender imports it as curve objects.

Select a curve (click it in the viewport). In the Properties panel, open Curve Properties (Bézier icon) and set Geometry → Extrude to your desired height (e.g., 3.0 for 3 mm). The curve becomes a 3D shape. Repeat for all curves.

Convert curves to meshes: select all (A), press Alt+C, choose Mesh. Then Object → Join (Ctrl+J) to merge everything into one object.

Export: File → Export → STL. Enable Selection Only, set Scale to 1.0, choose Binary format, and save.

Using Tinkercad

Open Tinkercad, sign in, and create a new design. Click Import, select your SVG, set height and scale, and click Import. Tinkercad traces the SVG and drops the extruded shape onto the workplane.

Adjust the height in the properties panel (right side) if needed. Export: Export → .STL, download the file.

Step 3: Import STL into Bambu Studio

Open Bambu Studio and click Add (or drag the STL file into the window). The mesh appears on the build plate. If the size is wrong, select the object and use the Scale tool (S) to resize it. Check the dimensions in the object properties panel (right side).

Position the object on the plate with the Move tool (M) or Auto Arrange (A). Rotate it if needed with the Rotate tool (R).

Method 2: Use Bambu Studio's Built-In Text Tool

For simple text labels (names, dates, captions), Bambu Studio's text tool is faster than external conversion.

Adding Text

In Bambu Studio, click Add → Add Text (or press T). A text box appears in the center of the build plate. Type your text in the properties panel (right side).

Choose a font from the dropdown. Bambu Studio lists system fonts installed on your computer. If your font is not listed, install it in your operating system first (copy the font file to /Library/Fonts on Mac, C:\Windows\Fonts on Windows, or ~/.fonts on Linux), then restart Bambu Studio.

Set the Height (extrusion depth, e.g., 2.0 mm) and Size (text point size, e.g., 36 pt). Adjust until the text looks correct in the 3D preview.

Position and rotate the text with the Move (M) and Rotate (R) tools. Click Apply to convert the text into a mesh.

Limitations

The text tool only handles plain text — no logos, shapes, or SVG paths. For anything beyond lettering, use Method 1.

Multi-Color Logos with AMS

Bambu Studio's paint tool lets you assign different colors (filaments) to regions of a mesh for multi-color printing with the AMS (Automatic Material System). This works for logos, badges, and designs with distinct color regions.

Step 1: Import the Logo as STL

Convert your multi-color logo to STL externally (Method 1). If the logo has multiple parts (e.g., a badge with text on top), export each part as a separate STL and import them all into Bambu Studio. Use Align to position them correctly relative to each other.

Step 2: Paint Regions

Select the imported object. Click the Paint tool (P) in the left toolbar. The object turns gray with a wireframe overlay.

In the paint panel (right side), select a filament color from the AMS slot list (e.g., Slot 1 = Red, Slot 2 = Blue). Use the Brush or Fill tool to paint regions of the mesh. The painted region highlights in the selected color.

Switch to a different AMS slot and paint other regions. Bambu Studio slices the model with filament changes at each color boundary. The slicer inserts tool-change commands (T0, T1, T2) automatically.

Step 3: Slice and Print

Once painting is complete, click Slice Plate. Bambu Studio generates G-code with filament changes at the correct Z-heights. Preview the sliced model in the Preview tab to verify color layers align correctly.

Send the G-code to the printer via network, SD card, or direct USB connection. The AMS swaps filaments automatically during printing.

Fixing Common Issues

STL Imports at Wrong Size

If your logo imports as 0.1 mm or 10 meters instead of 100 mm, the scale is wrong. Select the object, click Scale (S), and type a scale factor (e.g., 10 or 0.1) in the properties panel. Alternatively, convert the SVG at the correct scale before import.

Text Tool Font Missing

If your font does not appear in the dropdown, install it in your operating system's font directory and restart Bambu Studio. For custom fonts not installed system-wide, use Method 1: outline the text in Inkscape/Illustrator and convert to STL externally.

Paint Tool Not Working

If the Paint tool is grayed out or does not apply color, the mesh may be non-manifold (has holes or invalid geometry). Open the STL in Blender, run Mesh → Clean Up → Merge by Distance and Mesh → Normals → Recalculate Outside, then re-export and import into Bambu Studio.

Filament Changes Cause Gaps

If color boundaries show gaps or misalignment, enable Wipe Tower in Slice settings. This purges residual filament before each color change, preventing color bleed. Increase Prime Volume if the first layer of the new color is under-extruded.

Best Practices

  • Always convert text to paths in Inkscape/Illustrator before converting to STL.
  • Set extrusion height to at least 0.8 mm (2× nozzle diameter) for structural strength.
  • For multi-color logos, paint regions in Bambu Studio rather than importing separate STLs per color — this ensures perfect alignment.
  • Check the sliced preview in the Preview tab before printing to verify layer alignment and filament changes.
  • Use the Wipe Tower for multi-color prints to prevent color bleed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import SVG directly into Bambu Studio?

No. Bambu Studio reads 3D meshes (STL, 3MF, OBJ, STEP), not 2D vectors. Convert the SVG to STL first: open in Blender, extrude to 3D, export as STL, then import into Bambu Studio. For simple text, use Bambu Studio's built-in text tool (Add → Add Text).

How do I add text to a Bambu Studio print?

Click Add → Add Text (or press T). Type your text, choose a font, set height (e.g., 2 mm) and size (e.g., 36 pt). Position with Move (M) and Rotate (R) tools, then click Apply. The text converts to a mesh. For custom fonts, install them system-wide first.

How do I print a multi-color logo with Bambu AMS?

Convert the logo to STL externally. Import into Bambu Studio, select the object, click Paint (P). Choose an AMS slot (filament color) and paint regions of the mesh. Switch slots and paint other regions. Slice and print — the AMS swaps filaments automatically at color boundaries.

Why does my imported STL have the wrong size?

SVG uses user units (pixels/points), not millimeters. The scale is wrong. Select the object in Bambu Studio, click Scale (S), and type a factor (e.g., 10 or 0.1). Alternatively, scale the object in Blender before exporting STL.

Can I use Bambu Studio's text tool for logos?

No. The text tool only handles plain text, not shapes or logos. For logos, convert the SVG to STL in Blender or Tinkercad first, then import into Bambu Studio. The text tool is for simple labels and lettering only.
